This study aims to examine the semantic dimensions and interpretive functions of the concept of “istighfar” (seeking forgiveness) in the Holy Qur’an, drawing on exegetical traditions to analyze selected verses from three pivotal surahs: Al ‘Imran, Hud, and Nuh. The main question of this research is to explain the diversity of the functions of istighfar in various Qur’anic contexts through attention to exegetical reports, and to clarify the relationship between this concept and the different dimensions of human life. Despite the numerous verses related to istighfar in the Qur’an, this study focuses on these three surahs rather than offering a scattered and general examination of all such verses, because these surahs represent the three main spheres of istighfar’s function: “strengthening faith and returning from deviation” (Al ‘Imran), “social reform and connection with the mission” (Hud), and “expansion in material and livelihood blessings” (Nuh). Thus, concentrating on these three surahs instead of addressing all surahs enables the study to move beyond a general descriptive approach toward a structured and in-depth analysis of the key functions of istighfar, and to explain the link between human inner transformation and the external order of society within a complete conceptual framework. The research method is descriptive-analytical with a comparative approach between prominent Shia and Sunni commentaries. The findings show that, from the perspective of exegetical traditions, istighfar in the Qur’an is a dynamic process that begins with a return in belief, extends to social reform, and ultimately leads to openness in material life.
