The Qur’anic title Umm al-Mu’minin (Mother of the Believers) is one of the designations pertaining to the status of the wives of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Determining its semantic scope and its legal, ethical, and political implications is important for analyzing their personalities and historical conduct. The principal question of this study is whether this title, in addition to prohibiting marriage to the Prophet’s wives and requiring respect for them, also implies infallibility, absolute justice, scholarly authority, or independent political legitimacy. Employing a descriptive-analytical method and a comparative approach, this study examines Qur’anic, hadith, exegetical, and historical data from the sources of the two Islamic traditions and evaluates the positions attributed to Aisha in relation to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Lady Khadijah (SA), Lady Fatimah al-Zahra (SA), Imam Ali (AS), and Imam Hasan al-Mujtaba (AS). The findings indicate that Umm al-Mu’minin is a relational, honorific, and legal title, whose most definite consequences are the prohibition of marrying the Prophet’s wives after his demise and the necessity of preserving their respect. However, this title does not, in itself, establish infallibility, absolute justice, immunity from criticism, universal scholarly authority, or independent political legitimacy. Moreover, an examination of reports concerning Aisha’s conduct toward the Prophet (PBUH) and the Ahl al-Bayt (AS), particularly her positions during the Battle of Jamal and the incident concerning the burial of Imam Hasan (AS), demonstrates the need to distinguish between the respect arising from marital association with the Prophet and the critical assessment of historical conduct. Accordingly, maintaining reverence for the Prophet’s wives does not conflict with a scholarly and documented critique of their historical statements and actions. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
