The statement, “In the Qur’an there are meanings that time will reveal” has been attributed by some to ‘Abdullah ibn ‘Abbās. Like any other historical claim, it requires verification of authenticity. More important than determining the accuracy of this attribution, however, is examining its semantic implications and clarifying its content and intended meaning. What similar statements exist, and how can this proposition be utilized in discussions on the principles of exegesis (Tafsīr)? Employing a descriptive-analytical method, this study aims to answer the above questions by evaluating both the chain of transmission and the semantic content of this statement, arriving at the following conclusions. The statement is not found in any earlier or later tradition sources, and its attribution to Ibn ‘Abbās cannot be substantiated. However, its content can be observed in some narrations from the Infallibles (AS) with different wording and phrasing. Narrations that describe the Qur’an as a “living, undying” entity, liken it to the continuously moving sun and moon, and, moreover, those that not only permit analogical extension to similar cases but also forbid restricting verses solely to the specific occasions of their revelation, belong to the same conceptual family as this statement. They are grounded in the fundamental principle of the universality and timelessness of the Qur’an.
