Achieving a precise understanding of the divine intent and discerning the meanings of Quranic verses necessitate a profound knowledge of exegetical preliminaries as well as the analytical establishment and consolidation of their foundational principles. Quranic exegetes, prior to or at the outset of their interpretive engagement, typically undertake an examination of these underlying assumptions that shape their hermeneutical orientation. The foundations of Quranic exegesis refer to the fundamental theological and epistemological premises that govern interpretation and are generally divided into two principal categories: the transmissional foundations (mabānī ṣudūrī) and the significational foundations (mabānī dalālī). The transmissional foundations pertain to the divine origin, authenticity, and revelatory issuance of the Quranic text, affirming its direct derivation from God. These include: the outward (ẓāhir) and inward (bāṭin) dimensions of the Quran; the potential of the Quran to disclose the knowledge of past and future realities; the divine nature of its words and meanings; the manifestation of divine knowledge within the text; and the eternal, miraculous inimitability of the Quran. The significational foundations, in contrast, concern the mechanisms through which the Quranic text conveys meaning and establish the epistemic framework for comprehending the Divine will. These include: the intelligibility of Quranic language; the epistemic validity of its apparent meanings; the semantic structure and multi-layered hermeneutical depth of the text; the coherence and interconnectedness of the verses; and the comprehensiveness and unity of the Quranic discourse. This study examines these transmissional and significational foundations of Quranic interpretation as reflected in Nahj al-Balāghah, identifying instances of such principles in the words of Amīr al-Muʾminīn ʿAlī (AS). Employing a discovery-explanatory methodology and library-based research design, the study demonstrates that several of these interpretive foundations are explicitly or implicitly articulated within the sermons, letters, and aphorisms of Nahj al-Balāghah. In essence, every hermeneutically effective element or principle-whether related to the divine origin and revelation of the Quran or to the textual and semantic structure of its verses-can be extracted and rationally inferred from the discourses of Imam ʿAlī (AS), thus offering a profound model for contemporary Quranic hermeneutics.
