Thawāb (divine reward) is among the key theological concepts in the Qur’an and Islamic traditions. As the innate human inclination drives individuals toward benefit and away from harm, a correct understanding of reward motivates the human soul to seek it. Yet, mere desire for thawāb is insufficient for its attainment. This study seeks to address the central question: What are the necessary conditions, according to the Qur’an and hadith, for attaining divine reward? The objective of this research is to analyze the prerequisites for achieving thawāb as presented in scriptural sources, in order to guide human behavior toward rightful conduct. This becomes especially vital in light of the materialistic culture of contemporary society, the distractions of virtual spaces, and widespread negligence of eternal felicity and divine recompense. Utilizing a descriptive-analytical methodology, the findings indicate that certain types of worldly rewards require only righteous action and effort without further conditions. However, for attaining ultimate eschatological reward (thawāb al-ukhrāwī) and higher forms of this-worldly reward associated with devotional acts, three conditions must co-exist: faith (īmān), righteous deed (ʿamal ṣāliḥ), and sincere intention (niyyah). A deficiency in any of these elements invalidates the attainment of divine or eternal reward. The study also shows that in some cases, a combination of worldly and otherworldly reward is possible; however, when immediate material gain conflicts with eschatological benefit, preference must be given to the latter.
